Playtime is Over...

After 25 days of leave, Taylor finally had to go back to work. It is disappointing because we had so much fun on vacation! In fact, our motto for the few weeks was, "WHO CARES! WE ARE ON VACATION!" So the plus side of this extended period of fun is us getting back into a routine. Back to healthier dinners and workouts during the weekdays.

Before that boring stuff though, I'll share our trip!

Unlike other Christmas vacations, we only stayed in the desert sun this time (yes, I know Utah is technically a desert, but I still say no). Taylor, Ella and I started our trip south and drove to Deming, NM and stayed a short but sweet night with Taylor's sister, Chelsea. We loved seeing their cute house and having a place to rest for the night before continuing on to Arizona. The next morning we woke up and drove the few hours to Phoenix to drop Ella off at Grandma's house. Since my mom is craving for a grand-child I thought letting her watch our dog would fulfill her Grandma wishes.

We then headed south from there to Tucson where we spent a few days with my grandparents. The first night we relaxed and had Grandma's chili. Words of wisdom from Grandma, "You can never mess up chili" and boy is she right!

The next day we ventured over to the Pima Space & Air Museum. I haven't been married a long time but I have learned that if your husband wants to go to an air museum, you let the man go to the damn air museum.

The next few days were spent relaxing and enjoying delicious food. Our bellies were happy and we both love spending time with my Grandma and Grandpa.

After Tucson we went back to Phoenix and spent a few days with my mom. It was also very relaxing and fun! We stayed up playing games, chatting, and Ella pretended to be scary to the cats. We also got in a visit with good friends including my favorite Maes Family.

The journey certainly didn't end in Arizona. While Taylor was deployed I bought us a two night stay at the Westin Lake Resort on Lake Las Vegas. The first day we were supposed to be there was a Sunday and we ALL know that Sunday's are dedicated to football and the Broncos. Of course the Broncos had the early game which meant 10:00 am, Nevada time.

Taylor and I thought this through and through, knowing that they were an hour earlier but for whatever reason had it stuck in our heads that we had to leave at 4:00 am to make it by 10:00 am kick off. We wake up and are on the road by 4:00 am only to get to Vegas by 8:00 am. DUH. Well at least we didn't miss kick-off!

The Broncos started our Vegas stay with a win and from there we wandered the strip, did a little gambling, and enjoyed the crazy people on the street. The resort was 20 minutes outside of Vegas making it nice to get away from all the hustle and bustle. It was in a beautiful location and was exactly what we were looking for.

We left Sin City and headed back to Phoenix. We didn't return as millionaires but we also didn't lose any pennies! Taylor and I were thankful to spend Christmas Eve and Day with my mom and sister and be around family and people we love.

Finally, we headed back to Colorado Springs with the desert sun behind us and Ella in the backseat. It might seem like the vacation is over now but don't worry folks, Taylor still had ten more days off!

I can't remember the last time I wasn't in Utah to bring in the New Year but this NYE we blew our horns and lit our sparklers in Downtown Colorado Springs. It certainly didn't beat being with our friends back home but I assure you I didn't dance any different or sip my cocktails any slower.

Okay, Okay, vacation is almost over!

Just this past Monday, Taylor went up to Loveland and skied with his buddy for the first time in about 2 years! He said he was pretty rusty to begin with but finally found his groove.

And there we have it, our vacation has finally come to a close. We worked out for the first time today and I can already feel the sore muscles settling in. Getting back into our routine is going to be rough but I sure am excited. Oh! and for your visual taste buds here is the homemade Vodka Sauce with Penne and Italian Sausage I made last night. Don't worry, most of the vodka went into the dish.

Guess Who's Back? Back Again!

Two weeks ago I picked up a stinky, fit, handsome guy at Fort Carson. Life has been pretty amazing for the past few weeks. No more Skype dates, bad internet connections, living in hot sand, making meals for one, or talking to the dog.

Also, Taylor couldn't have come home at a better time! HALLOWEEN! We dressed up (no we aren't too old) as Mario and Luigi, Mario Kart style! Taylor built the Karts, painted the Karts, gassed them up and then we drove those suckers downtown.

Other than making costumes we have also been watching football and loving on our Broncos, making delicious food, and working out! I started meeting Taylor at the gym on Post after he finishes work. I do his workouts (with smaller weight of course) and it has been extremely fun. It it time spent together while staying healthy and fit; I love that.

Speaking of healthy, let's all drool over this Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Pepper I made last week...

Lastly, this week we were excited to have Chelsea (Taylor's sister) and Jeremy visit us! I think Ella was even more excited than we were because they brought their cute puppy Buster with them.

It was a short but very sweet visit!

Fall Hike!

On October 4th, Ella and I went up to the mountains to catch the fall leaves before they disappear. We took a dirt road up to 9,000 ft and it was beautiful! It was the first time I have let Ella off the leash in an open space and she did amazing! She ran everywhere but still checked in on me. I guess she ain't as dumb as she looks!

Now the leaves are starting to change here in the Springs so I have my pumpkin candle burning and spent the day creating fall decorations for the house.

Here are some pictures from our hiking adventure:

Oh! And here is the spinach dip I made on Sunday for football. How 'bout them Broncos?

Deployment Days

Okay, Okay! The blog is coming back! Maybe it is the fall weather, or maybe I am being pressured into it (ahem, thank you Samples) but I will continue to update you all on our life and attempt to catch you up on the last few months!

Let's start off with the sad news first. As most of you know, Duke solved his last mystery in July. We will sure miss that stinky guy around here! Speaking of stinky guys, two days later, Taylor deployed. He has been wandering the sands of the middle east, playing on tanks while I have been holding the fort down here in Colorado.

Communication has been amazing (it is 2013 after all) and I feel like we haven't missed a beat. We have our weekly skype dates and laugh while sharing stories and future plans. We talk about traveling all over Europe when we get to Germany. We argue about Fantasy Football and Taylor whines about my awesome team. Everything has been completely normal, minus the fact we are 7000 miles apart.

I have been trying to keep myself busy while Taylor fiddles around in the sand. Thankfully I have the Ella monster for that. We like to take walks, go on runs, and just this week we did a sunrise hike at Garden of the Gods.
I have been expanding my recipe (and photography) horizons as well. I like to blast music, sip on some wine, and cook! For your viewing taste buds, here are a few things I have cooked during the deployment:

Salmon

Sweet and Sour Chicken with fried rice

Garlic Chicken with Rosemary

Corn Chowder

I have done a few trips here and there including my Utah trip most recently! My 9 hour drive allowed me to take in deep breaths of the Steamboat Springs air, see the colors changing on the trees, and see the dinosaurs in Vernal, UT. I was able to celebrate my birthday with my best friends Danielle and Evan along with other good friends, good food, good beer, and good company. I enjoyed feeling the Ute Vibe as Utah beat BYU in football and I got my Costa Vida craving satisfied. Like usual, I had a great time visiting that Salty City.

I wish I could tell you exactly what Taylor has been up to but I am not completely sure. Let's just say it's a secret but he is fine and well and ready to come home!

Now that it is October, the countdown begins!

Hikes, reenlistments, and birthdays!

Last weekend was quite special for us! At 6 am on Friday I joined Taylor's company in a 6 mile hike at Garden of the Gods. We took Ella along and enjoyed the perfect weather, the sunrise, and the scenery. After the hike was Taylors reenlistment ceremony. Here's to four more years in Germany!

Monday was Taylor's 27th birthday! We did a fun little hike up Helen Hunt falls and enjoyed the day together. I made birthday ribs for dinner and then we celebrated with birthday cake and birthday champagne with our neighbors, Emma and Frank.

Doggy Business

Let me tell you all a quick story:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said 'let there be light'
and in the light, he beheld a gentle leader.

We have been using the Gentle Leader for a week and our walks have actually become ENJOYABLE! I wish we would have known about it sooner. It is very comfortable so she does not mind. The collar fits up high by her ears and around her neck, with a loop that goes around her nose. It's not a muzzle so she is still able to open her mouth, eat, bark, and drink water. Soon, she will be joining us on our 5k tuesday evening runs!

Unfortunately, Duke can no longer join us on our daily walks. As most of you know, Duke Wizowski has bone cancer in his right back leg. His limping limits how far he can go so for now he will just enjoy the front porch with us.
